Police want SK Mbuga in court, Singer Leila Kayondo protests

Kampala.
Police have insisted city businessman, SK Mbuga, being held for allegedly assaulting his partner, Ms Leila Kayondo, must be taken to court despite him settling the case with the victim.
Mr SK Mbuga has been in detention at Kabalagala Police Station since January 1. The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Mr Patrick Onyango, said police leadership has resolved to push Mr Mbuga’s assault case to court.
“Ms Kayondo recorded an additional statement yesterday stating that she wasn’t assaulted by Mr Mbuga, contrary to her earlier statement. She wanted us to release her partner immediately. But we need to investigate whether she recorded her additional statement under duress or not,” Mr Onyango said yesterday.
On the night of January 1, Ms Kayondo reported an assault case against Mr Mbuga at Kabalagala Police Station. However, that night, police officers failed to trace Mr Mbuga at his home and called off the search but gave her police form III for a medical examination.
Although she went for the examination, she was annoyed with police for not arresting Mr Mbuga. She then used her social media platform and sought help from Gen Kale Kayihura, the police chief. She accused Kabalagala police officers of conniving with her partner to defeat justice.
Gen Kayihura ordered the hunt and arrest of Mr Mbuga. Interestingly, the arresting officers found Mr Mbuga having a good time with Ms Kayondo.
“When they tried to arrest Mr Mbuga, Ms Kayondo put up a fight saying she had already forgiven him and she was going to withdraw the case with police. Our officers disregarded her plea and arrested him,” Mr Onyango said.
After Mr Mbuga’s arrest, Ms Kayondo went to police and recorded an additional statement which contradicted the earlier statement she made.
She left the police station on Sunday night vowing that even when the case is taken to court, she will not testify against him. Police, however, said they will not charge Ms Kayondo with giving false information to the police.
